What should you do when facing a data emergency?
There are many causes for data loss. Most commonly, these occur when:
- Files have unintentionally been erased
- The boot record has been wiped out by a virus
- A drive has been “F-disked” or formatted
- An operating system no longer recognises a drive
- There is physical damage to the media
Taking into account that you most likely do not have a feasible backup from which to restore, your first course of action should be to stop using the drive and call Data Detect immediately – so we can have the electronic media collected from you.
It is important to understand that even if you cannot directly access lost files, they still exist on your machine. When you accidentally erase a file, the data has not been permanently deleted from the drive. In fact, what simply happens is that the operating system sees the file as one that can be overwritten, in turn making space for new files. Provided that nothing new has been written to the drive, the data is still there and can still be successfully recovered.
One must not continue to use the drive, when containing unstable data, the entire data process can be doomed – as the chances are that some of the files will be overwritten. A simple act, like surfing the internet, can overwrite valuable data on the drive. Subsequent software installations – such as the installation of so-called data recovery software – can demolish up to one hundred times its data size. It is therefore important to never copy or install anything to a drive where data recovery is required. The best option available to you is to stop running the drive immediately.
Even when cases of unintentional deletion are at their most extreme, such as a drive formatted from FAT32 to NTFS, data is still recovered if handled by the right tools and technicians. So, if you do the right thing and shut down your drive immediately, the chances of your files all being in tact are high – and they can be reconstructed, in most cases, almost perfectly.
The biggest challenge, when needing to recover lost data, is a physical problem with the hardware or drive. This typically occurs when the drive is making unusual or strange noises, or a drive is no longer recognized by the BIOS. In such instances, data recovery software is not of much use and for each time that you run the drive, the chance of a successful recovery becomes less and less. In all cases of a physical data recovery, the device is transferred to a clean room, where the atmosphere is controlled.
